  1. Indicator light (parking brake)

NHTSA 78V205000 Reported 1,252 vehicles potentially affected GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

The parking brake switch connector contains electrical wires that may be reversed. As a result, the lamp will be activated whenever the ignition is turned on, even though the parking brake is not engaged. This constitutes a non-compliance to federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 105, "hydraulic brake systems". The standard requires…

Remedy: Dealer will inspect and, if necessary, correct the parking brake switch wiring without charge to owner.

  2. Labels (equipment)

NHTSA 78V206000 Reported 1,688 vehicles potentially affected GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

The involved vehicles do not have a brake fluid reservoir warning which states, "warning, clean filler cap before removing. Use only DOT 3 fluid from a sealed container". This constitutes a non-compliance to federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 105, "hydraulic brake systems".

Remedy: The dealer will install the brake fluid reservoir warning plate without charge to owner.

  3. Tank assembly (fuel system)

NHTSA 78V207000 Reported 2,024 vehicles potentially affected GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

The fuel tank fusible bushing element may have melted due to extremely high temperatures encountered when the tanks were exposed to direct sunlight rays during chassis storage.

Remedy: The dealer will inspect and, if necessary, replace the fuel tank vent plug without charge to owner.

  4. Steering wheel/handle bar (steering)

NHTSA 78V019000 Reported 22,268 vehicles potentially affected GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

The intermediate shaft coupling on the involved vehicles may have been machined oversized in the serration area where it attaches to the steering column. This would prevent the coupling from properly tightening on the shaft when the clamp and pinch bolt were installed.

Remedy: Dealer will replace the shaft coupling, if necessary, without charge to owner.

Checking a specific 1978 Chevrolet P30

How do I know if my 1978 Chevrolet P30 has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 4 campaigns currently list the 1978 Chevrolet P30; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Chevrolet dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 78V019000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.

Recall counts are safety campaigns that list this model year; whether a particular car was already repaired depends on its VIN. How this data is compiled.
