  1. Vehicle speed control

NHTSA 89V102000 Reported 1,755,897 vehicles potentially affected GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

A small nylon bushing in the cruise control servo bail may slip out of place, causing intermittent and unexpected increases in engine speed or dieseling (engine run on with ignition off).

Remedy: Install a new bushing in cruise control servo bail.

  2. Retractor (seat belts)

NHTSA 84V154000 Reported 19 vehicles potentially affected GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

The vehicles were assembled with front seat belt retractors which may not perform adequately during a collision.

Remedy: The dealer will replace the left and right front seat belt retractors free of charge.

  3. Tie rod assembly (steering)

NHTSA 84V124000 Reported 10,359 vehicles potentially affected GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

The tie rods are part of the steering linkage and transmit turning movements to the wheels. The bolts that fasten the tie rods to their adjusters may not be tight enough. This could allow the tie rod to loosen and detach itself from the adjuster.

Remedy: The tie rod end bolts will be tightened without cost to the owner.

Checking a specific 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass

How do I know if my 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 3 campaigns currently list the 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Oldsmobile dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 84V124000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.
