  1. Fuel pump (fuel system)

NHTSA 88V117000 Reported 279,821 vehicles potentially affected AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.

Under certain conditions, mechanical fuel pumps may develop fuel leakage at crimped seam between the two fuel pump halves.

Remedy: Install an improved fuel pump assembly.

  2. Latch (latches/locks/linkages)

NHTSA 83V131000 Reported 10,421 vehicles potentially affected AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.

Production tolerance errors could allow accidental hood opening. If the hood is not securely latched in the fully locked position, driving at high speed or hitting a large bump could cause the hood to open without warning.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace defective hood latches at no charge.

  3. Driveshaft (power train)

NHTSA 83V132000 Reported 2,825 vehicles potentially affected AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.

Left drive shaft may develop cracks, and may break under heavy loading such as that caused by rapid acceleration. This defect originated in a manufacturing process which has now been improved.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the left drive shaft on vehicles that have not been previously corrected, at no charge.

Checking a specific 1984 Honda Civic

How do I know if my 1984 Honda Civic has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 3 campaigns currently list the 1984 Honda Civic; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Honda dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 83V131000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.

Recall counts are safety campaigns that list this model year; whether a particular car was already repaired depends on its VIN. How this data is compiled.
