  1. Suspension: lower arm

NHTSA 91V217000 Reported 166,624 vehicles potentially affected GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

The left hand lower control arm can crack starting at the rear flange and progressing to the ball joint mounting hole and eventually cause the lower ball joint to separate from the control arm.

Remedy: Install a resinforced brace to the left hand lower control arm.

  2. Tank assembly (fuel system)

NHTSA 87V002000 Reported 86,152 vehicles potentially affected GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

Trucks failed to comply with requirements of FMVSS 301, fuel system integrity, during a 30 MPH frontal barrier test.

Remedy: Install an additional shield to the front of the original shield to protect the fuel tank.

  3. Rim (wheels)

NHTSA 85V156000 Reported 861 vehicles potentially affected GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

The wheel may develop cracks between the disc and rim. Consequence of defect: if this occurs and is not noticed, the crack could increase around the rim, resulting in separation of the rim from the disc, loss of control and an accident may occur.

Remedy: Replace wheels having the suspected manufacturing code number.

Checking a specific 1985 GMC C35

How do I know if my 1985 GMC C35 has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 3 campaigns currently list the 1985 GMC C35; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised GMC dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 85V156000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.
