  1. Hoses, lines/piping, and fittings (fuel system)

NHTSA 83V039000 Reported 250 vehicles potentially affected FORD MOTOR COMPANY

Fuel leaks could develop in either of two connections in a fuel supply line. One connection under the vehicle may have been damaged or improperly installed. The other suspect part is in the engine compartment and contains a pressure relief valve.

Remedy: The dealer will install a revised design fuel line valve assembly with new hose clamps and replace the fuel supply hose clamp, if it is damaged or incorrect. Notification was made to dealers prior to any recorded…

  2. Automatic transmission (power train)

NHTSA 83V028000 Reported 98,162 vehicles potentially affected FORD MOTOR COMPANY

The parking gear may not engage, even though the gear shift lever is placed in the "park" position. This occurs if the linkage inside the transmission that actuates the park gear was improperly manufactured. A pin that retains components on a linkage (actuating) rod could break and the linkage may not engage the parking gear.

Remedy: Dealer will inspect and, if necessary, replace the parking pawl actuating rod assembly.

  3. Tank assembly (fuel system)

NHTSA 83V012000 Reported 2,673 vehicles potentially affected FORD MOTOR COMPANY

Some of these vehicles may have been built with fuel tanks that have inadequately welded front seams that can leak.

Remedy: The dealer will determine if the vehicle was corrected at the factory; if not, the fuel tank will be replaced at no charge to the owner.

Checking a specific 1983 Ford Thunderbird

How do I know if my 1983 Ford Thunderbird has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 3 campaigns currently list the 1983 Ford Thunderbird; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Ford dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 83V012000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.
