  1. Bead (tires)

NHTSA 96V117000 Reported 5,773 vehicles potentially affected GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

These tires have bead damage which occured during tire mounting.

Remedy: Dealers will demount each tire and inspect for bead damage. If bead damage is found, the tire will be replaced.

  2. U-bolt, leaf spring to axle (suspension)

NHTSA 96V082000 Reported 16,918 vehicles potentially affected GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

The four u-bolts nuts on either side of the rear axle were under-torqued.

Remedy: Dealers will check the u-bolt nut torque and re-torque any loose u-bolts to specification.

  3. Vehicle speed control

NHTSA 96V057000 Reported 379,004 vehicles potentially affected GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

These vehicles were assembled with the throttle cable contacting the dash mat which could bind the throttle. This does not meet with the maximum return times required by federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 124, "accelerator control systems."

Remedy: Dealers will inspect for adequate throttle cable to dash mat clearance, and if there is insufficient clearance, cut out a portion of the dash mat to provide proper clearance.

Checking a specific 1996 Chevrolet K30

How do I know if my 1996 Chevrolet K30 has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 3 campaigns currently list the 1996 Chevrolet K30; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Chevrolet dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 96V057000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.

Recall counts are safety campaigns that list this model year; whether a particular car was already repaired depends on its VIN. How this data is compiled.
