  1. Hoses, lines/piping, and fittings (service brakes)

NHTSA 80V014000 Reported 46,556 vehicles potentially affected GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

The hydraulic steel brake tube connecting the brake hose to the left or right front top wheel cylinder may develop a fracture in the bend next to the wheel cylinder. This fracture results from periodic high stresses in the tube due to "brake chatter" which can occur during certain environmental conditions.

Remedy: The dealer will replace the front brake tubes at no charge to owner.

  2. Cables (electrical system)

NHTSA 80V016000 Reported 8,474 vehicles potentially affected GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

A misrouting of the positive battery cable may exist. As a result, the positive battery cable insulation could be damaged from exhaust manifold heat. The wire in the cable may then contact and damage the metal brake tube.

Remedy: All involved vehicles will be inspected for positive battery cable misrouting and possible heat damage to the insulation. If necessary, the positive battery cable will be replaced or rerouted at no charge to owner.

  3. Hoses, lines/piping, and fittings (service brakes)

NHTSA 80V017000 Reported 850 vehicles potentially affected GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

During testing of the fire apparatus, extreme heat generated from the right side engine exhaust manifold, resulted in damage to the brake hose at the frame fitting. This could cause a leak in the front axle hydraulic brake hose.

Remedy: Dealer will install an exhaust heat shield at the right side frame to brake hose fitting and replace front brake hoses at no charge to owner.

Checking a specific 1978 Chevrolet Chevrolet Truck

How do I know if my 1978 Chevrolet Chevrolet Truck has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 3 campaigns currently list the 1978 Chevrolet Chevrolet Truck; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Chevrolet dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 80V014000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.
