  1. Fan (engine and engine cooling)

NHTSA 79V148000 Reported 575 vehicles potentially affected WHITE MOTOR CORPORATION

Lockwashers, used to retain the engine"s fan mounting bolts, may have been omitted during assembly, causing the bolts to loosen and allowing the fan to separate from its mounting hub.

Remedy: Dealer will install lockwashers on the bolts.

  2. Steering wheel/handle bar (steering)

NHTSA 79V084000 Reported 5,639 vehicles potentially affected WHITE MOTOR CORPORATION

The metal stiffener at the rear of the splash shield may become bent during servicing or by abuse. This can allow the splash shield and stiffener or one of its attaching bolts to rub against and cut the steering shaft.

Remedy: The splash shield stiffener will be removed and the steering shaft will be replaced, if damaged.

  3. Windshield wiper/washer (visibility)

NHTSA 79V008000 Reported 12,333 vehicles potentially affected WHITE MOTOR CORPORATION

The windshield wiper may over-travel its designed sweep angle during its initial stroke with the possibility of temporary wiper immobilization.

  4. Leaf spring assembly (suspension)

NHTSA 79V010000 Reported 34 vehicles potentially affected WHITE MOTOR CORPORATION

Some of the vehicles may have manganese bronze spring clip plates used as a substitute for malleable iron. The substitute clips, which are used to attach the suspension spring to the rear axle, may crack allowing the assembly to loosen. This can cause rear axle displacement.

Remedy: The dealer will replace the manganese bronze clips with malleable iron clip plates at no cost to owner.

  5. Steering wheel/handle bar (steering)

NHTSA 79V110000 Reported 8,921 vehicles potentially affected WHITE MOTOR CORPORATION

The hose clamp, which was installed around the steering column boot seat to keep noise and dirt from entering the cab, may loosen.

Remedy: Dealer will replace the metal hose clamp without charge.

  6. Electrical system: wiring

NHTSA 78V240000 Reported 16,000 vehicles potentially affected WHITE MOTOR CORPORATION

Loss of lights and engine shutdown may occur as a result of electrical system failure due to improper circuit crimping and potential heater motor circuit overloading. Also, the fuel solenoid may be improperly fused and the headlight harness improperly routed.

Remedy: The dealer will make the necessary corrections, free of charge to the owner.

  7. Hoses, lines/piping, and fittings (service brakes)

NHTSA 78V157000 Reported 140 vehicles potentially affected WHITE MOTOR CORPORATION

The involved vehicles do not conform to federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 121, "air brake systems", in that some dual compartment air reservoirs were installed without a drain valve in both compartments. The omission of the drain valve could cause: 1) the tank to fill up with water due to condensation, 2) reduced air volume, 3)…

Remedy: Dealer will inspect and, if necessary, install a drain valve at no cost to owner.

  8. Latches/locks/linkages

NHTSA 78V152000 Reported 5,502 vehicles potentially affected WHITE MOTOR CORPORATION

The vinyl covered interior passenger assist/grab handle located on the right hand hinge pillar can wear and fail in service.

Remedy: The owner has the option of either having the dealer remove the handle free of charge or removing it himself and being reimbursed $3.00 per vehicle.

  9. Service brakes, air: control unit/module

NHTSA 78V132000 Reported 39 vehicles potentially affected WHITE MOTOR CORPORATION

The involved vehicles may have been built with power unit anti-skid logic modules on tag axle installations instead of the correct trailer type modules. Since the tag axle sensor output is less than that of the power unit sensor, it requires the more sensitive trailer module. As sensor output over time drops below minimum requirements,…

Remedy: Dealer will replace the incorrect anti-lock module without charge to owner.

  10. Antilock (service brakes)

NHTSA 77V109000 Reported 436 vehicles potentially affected WHITE MOTOR CORPORATION

The involved vehicles may fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 121, "air brake systems". The brakes may fail to release within the time specified by the standard.

How do I know if my 1977 White Truck RB2 has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 10 campaigns currently list the 1977 White Truck RB2; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised White Truck dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 77V109000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.
