  1. Steering wheel/handle bar (steering)

NHTSA 79V134000 Reported 64,150 vehicles potentially affected MACK TRUCKS, INCORPORATED

In the involved trucks it is possible the adjustable steering column rear mounting bracket could fail, allowing steering wheel assembly to fall down onto the operator"s lap.

Remedy: Dealer will install an additional bracket in this area to prevent the steering wheel from dislocating in the event of a bracket failure.

  2. Arm (steering)

NHTSA 78V172000 Reported 13,800 vehicles potentially affected MACK TRUCKS, INCORPORATED

The existing cross steering arms may have insufficient fatigue life in the neck area. This is near the boss for the cross steering tube ball joint connection. Failure of either of the cross steering levers could lead to loss of steering control of the right front wheel.

Remedy: The dealer will inspect and, if necessary, install cross steering arms of improved design and greater strength.

  3. Service brakes, air: control unit/module

NHTSA 78V068000 Reported 9,700 vehicles potentially affected MACK TRUCKS, INCORPORATED

An axle "no brake" condition could result from an eaton controller internal electrical malfunction. This condition may cause the anti-wheel lock valve solenoid to be continuously energized and prevent the brakes from being applied on one of the axles. As a result, the anti-wheel lock warning lamp is not activated.

Remedy: The dealer will inspect and, if necessary, replace the anti-wheel lock controller without charge to owner.

  4. Gasoline (engine and engine cooling)

NHTSA 78V032000 Reported 459 vehicles potentially affected MACK TRUCKS, INCORPORATED

The synflex-type oil pressure signal line may have been routed too close to the exhaust manifold. Excessive heat may cause the line to rupture, and oil leakage may occur.

Remedy: The dealer will reroute the oil pressure signal line to eliminate potential fire hazard, without charge to owner.

  5. Fan (engine and engine cooling)

NHTSA 77V173000 Reported 48,000 vehicles potentially affected MACK TRUCKS, INCORPORATED

The flex blade fans on the involved vehicles may develop cracks in the laminated stiffener as a result of fatigue during operation. If such a condition exists and the cracks go undetected, continued operation could cause pieces of the stiffener to break off.

Remedy: Dealer will replace the original fan with a steel fixed blade fan, free of charge.

Checking a specific 1976 Mack Dm

How do I know if my 1976 Mack Dm has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 5 campaigns currently list the 1976 Mack Dm; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Mack dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 77V173000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.

Recall counts are safety campaigns that list this model year; whether a particular car was already repaired depends on its VIN. How this data is compiled.
