-
Automatic transmission (power train)
The selector quadrant spiral retaining pin may work its way out of position so that the vehicle could remain in gear when selector lever is moved into the "park" position.
Remedy: Dealer will secure spiral pin using a retaining pin to permanently lock it in position.
-
Carburetor system (fuel system)
Under a combination of circumstances in cold weather, icing may prevent return of the throttle butterfly to the idle position.
Remedy: The dealer will fit coolant heated throttle bodies on all vehicles at no cost to owners.
-
Manifold/header/muffler/tail pipe (engine and engine cooling)
The exhaust downpipes installed on the involved vehicles may not permit proper clearance between the downpipes and the steering column lower joints. Upon making a hard full right turn, the exhaust downpipe and steering column could come into contact with each other. This could result in a loss of steering control.
Remedy: Dealer will inspect and, if necessary, replace the exhaust downpipe with one of modified shape, without charge to owner.

Checking a specific 1978 Jaguar XJ6
How do I know if my 1978 Jaguar XJ6 has an open recall?
Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 3 campaigns currently list the 1978 Jaguar XJ6; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.
Is the recall repair free?
Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Jaguar dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 78V196000).
What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?
A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.

Recall counts are safety campaigns that list this model year; whether a particular car was already repaired depends on its VIN. How this data is compiled.
