  1. Gear box (other than rack and pinion) (steering)

NHTSA 77V218000 Reported 40,000 vehicles potentially affected FORD MOTOR COMPANY

On the involved vehicles, the manual steering gears may contain steering gear recirculatory balls that could fracture. This fracturing is a result of improper heat-treatment during manufacture and can eventually cause increased steering effort.

Remedy: The dealer will inspect and, if necessary, replace the ball bearings of the steering gear, without charge to owner.

  2. Vehicle speed control

NHTSA 77V161000 Reported 16,000 vehicles potentially affected FORD MOTOR COMPANY

Some of the involved vehicles may have defective carburetors in which, under certain circumstances, the secondary throttle plates may stick open.

Remedy: Dealer will inspect and, if necessary, replace the carburetor at no charge to owner.

  3. Hoses, lines/piping, and fittings (fuel system)

NHTSA 77V141000 Reported 60,000 vehicles potentially affected FORD MOTOR COMPANY

The involved vehicles may experience fuel leakage at the rubber hose connecting the fuel inlet tube to the carburetor filter. This leakage condition is due to insufficient insertion of the fuel tube into the hose or improper positioning of the hose clamp, causing the clamp to be crimped directly over the fuel tube bead.

Remedy: Dealer will replace the existing fuel hose clamp with a spring-type clamp at the hose-to-fuel inlet tube connection, and adjust the connection where necessary, without charge.

  4. Mounting (fuel system)

NHTSA 77V082000 Reported 11 vehicles potentially affected FORD MOTOR COMPANY

The upper support strap nuts, attaching the fuel tank, were not tightened to specifications. This may allow the fuel tank to detach and fall to the ground.

Remedy: Dealer will tighten attaching nuts to proper specifications to secure the fuel tank, at no cost to owner.

  5. Labels (equipment)

NHTSA 76V190000 Reported 12,500 vehicles potentially affected FORD MOTOR COMPANY

Checking a specific 1977 Ford F150

How do I know if my 1977 Ford F150 has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 5 campaigns currently list the 1977 Ford F150; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Ford dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 76V190000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.
