  1. Hoses, lines/piping, and fittings (service brakes)

NHTSA 93V129000 Reported 76,000 vehicles potentially affected VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA,INC

An engine preheating tube may not be properly supported due to a missing support bracket, causing the preheating tube to chafe against the right front metal brake line. This can damage the hydraulic line, causing brake fluid leakage and diminished braking in one brake circuit.

Remedy: Dealers will install a preheating tube support bracket to ensure proper positioning relative to the right front metal brake line.

NHTSA 92V050000 Reported 650,000 vehicles potentially affected VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA,INC

The end cap connecting the heat exchanger's core to the engine cooling system could rupture and allow hot coolant to escape into the passenger compartment.

Remedy: Replace the heater core with an improved heater core.

  3. Hoses, lines/piping, and fittings (fuel system)

NHTSA 92V058000 Reported 358,000 vehicles potentially affected VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA,INC

The fuel hose attached to the fuel distribution rail on the engine may shrink beyond the clamp force of the fuel hose clamps, allowing fuel to leak.

Remedy: Replace the fuel hose attached to the fuel rail and install a new spring type self-tightening clamp.

  4. Caliper (service brakes)

NHTSA 90V142000 Reported 11,000 vehicles potentially affected VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA,INC

Omission of air ducts intended to guide flow of cooling air to left and right front brake calipers could allow brake fluid to exceed allowable operating temperature under certain operating conditions.

Checking a specific 1990 Volkswagen Golf

How do I know if my 1990 Volkswagen Golf has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 4 campaigns currently list the 1990 Volkswagen Golf; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Volkswagen dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 90V142000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.

Recall counts are safety campaigns that list this model year; whether a particular car was already repaired depends on its VIN. How this data is compiled.
