  1. Steering wheel/handle bar (steering)

NHTSA 96V147000 Reported 12,538 vehicles potentially affected PORSCHE CARS N.A. INC.

A part of the steering column upper universal joint cracked during the manufacturing process.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect the universal joint for cracks and will replace cracked joints with new parts.

  2. Fuses and circuit breakers (electrical system)

NHTSA 93V204000 Reported 11,346 vehicles potentially affected PORSCHE CARS N.A. INC.

After the engine has been turned off, the rear heater will automatically operate in order to dissipate heat in the engine heating system. During this operation, the resistor for the rear heater blower can become overloaded due to a binding or seized rear heater blower.

Remedy: Porsche dealers will install a new resistor containing a circuit breaker.

  3. Vehicle speed control

NHTSA 92V142000 Reported 11,091 vehicles potentially affected PORSCHE CARS N.A. INC.

The ball sockets on the cruise control linkage can break, allowing the cruise control linkage to become detached on one end and jam on nearby components, which could impair throttle plate operation.

Remedy: Replace the current plastic ball sockets with a new linkage using steel ball sockets, and lubricate the cruise control relay lever. Owners are advised not to use the cruise control until the modification is installed.

  4. Hoses, lines/piping, and fittings (fuel system)

NHTSA 91V103000 Reported 975 vehicles potentially affected PORSCHE CARS N.A. INC.

Due to routing of fuel line from the fuel tank to rear fuel pump, the fuel line may be damaged under certain driving conditions. On full travel of left rear suspension (jounce), the bracket for the brake pad wear indicator wire on left rear control arm could contact and damage fuel line.

Remedy: Replace damaged fuel line: in addition all fuel lines will be rerouted so that the brake pad wear indicator wire bracket cannot contact fuel line.

  5. Latch (latches/locks/linkages)

NHTSA 91V012000 Reported 2,451 vehicles potentially affected PORSCHE CARS N.A. INC.

Luggage in the luggage compartment and or plastic trim surrounding the safety latch may prevent the latch on the front hood from properly locking.

Remedy: Replace plastic trim piece and install a bracket behind the safety latch to prevent interference.

Checking a specific 1989 Porsche 911

How do I know if my 1989 Porsche 911 has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 5 campaigns currently list the 1989 Porsche 911; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Porsche dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 91V012000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.

Recall counts are safety campaigns that list this model year; whether a particular car was already repaired depends on its VIN. How this data is compiled.
