  2. Service brakes, air

NHTSA 99V055001 Reported 1,547 vehicles potentially affected INTERNATIONAL TRUCK AND ENGINE

Vehicle description: heavy duty trucks, transit and school buses, equipped with meritor air brake automatic slack adjusters. Some of the automatic slack adjusters had insufficient torque applied to the guide pawl cap screw.

Remedy: Dealers will check the torque on the automatic slack adjuster guide pawl. If there is no torque, the brakes will be adjusted and the guide pawl will be tightened to 15-20 ft. Lbs.

The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 2 campaigns currently list the 1999 Navistar 9800; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.

Recall counts are safety campaigns that list this model year; whether a particular car was already repaired depends on its VIN. How this data is compiled.
