Every NHTSA safety campaign that lists a Mercedes-Benz L1113, most recent first, with the model years each one covers.

  1. Connection (steering)

NHTSA 87V176000 Reported 23,386 vehicles potentially affected FREIGHTLINER CORP.

Slot in steering drag link to allow for clamping of the ball joint may not be fully closed by the ball joint thread.

Remedy: Replace drag link if opening exist; also, threaded stud of ball joint has been extended for complete closure of the slot.

    Model years: 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983

  2. Hoses, lines/piping, and fittings (service brakes)

NHTSA 85V020000 Reported 4,000 vehicles potentially affected FREIGHTLINER CORP.

A steel tube that delivers air to the front axle air brake chamber can contact the front shock absorber. Consequence of defect: repeated contact can wear a hole in the tube, causing air pressure to be lost during brake application. This could result in impaired braking capability and an accident.

Remedy: Reroute steel tube and/or replace, as necessary.

    Model years: 1984, 1985

  3. Service brakes, air

NHTSA 84V114000 Reported 405 vehicles potentially affected FREIGHTLINER CORP.

Some of the bolts attaching the brake assembly to the axle may fracture without warning. If one or more of these bolts fracture, it may result in rear brake assembly damage and brake ineffectiveness on the rear axle.

Remedy: The three long bolts in each brake assembly will be inspected for a code number, and bolts will be replaced at no charge to the owner.

    Model years: 1984

  4. Chamber (service brakes)

NHTSA 84V081000 Reported 428 vehicles potentially affected FREIGHTLINER CORP.

Because the air brake chambers are located above the rear axle housing, the air hose, which fits on top of the chambers, could come in contact with the underside of the body.

Remedy: Air chambers will be repositioned in order to lower the fittings. In addition, axle stops will be installed (with the exception of vehicles with 5900 mm wheel base) in order to ensure minimum upward travel of the axle.

    Model years: 1984

  5. Multi piece (wheels)

NHTSA 83V069000 Reported 20 vehicles potentially affected MERCEDES-BENZ USA, INC.

The defect is in the wheel rim side ring. The wheel is made up of a disc and rim assembly, side ring and lock ring. The side ring may have been improperly sized with respect to the other components.

Remedy: All wheels including spare will be inspected. The side ring or the complete rim will be replaced, as necessary.

    Model years: 1982

  6. Tires

NHTSA 78V202000 Reported 1,576 vehicles potentially affected MERCEDES-BENZ USA, INC.

The involved vehicles were equipped with incorrect tire flaps which allow the inner tube to protrude through the rim valve opening. Chafing and possible sudden loss of air can result.

Remedy: The dealer will inspect and, if necessary, replace tire flaps free of charge.

    Model years: 1977, 1978

  7. Power assist (service brakes)

NHTSA 77V055000 Reported 449 vehicles potentially affected MERCEDES-BENZ USA, INC.

An air leak could develop through the piston shaft seal ring which seals the inside of the brake booster from the atmosphere. This could result in a reduction in brake booster assist, necessitating increased brake pedal pressure.

Remedy: Dealer will replace the defective seal with an improved version at no charge to owner.

    Model years: 1975, 1976

  8. Steering wheel/handle bar (steering)

NHTSA 75V068000 Reported 865 vehicles potentially affected MERCEDES-BENZ USA, INC.
