  1. Mechanical (parking brake)

NHTSA 91V137000 Reported 96,541 vehicles potentially affected MERCEDES-BENZ USA, INC.

The design of the parking brake grip makes it possible to distort the grip and pinch the brake release knob. If the release knob sticks in a partial engage/release position because of the pinched grip, it is possible for the lever to release unintentionally with a corresponding reduction in parking brake force.

Remedy: Replace the parking brake grip with a new grip type.

  2. Fuses and circuit breakers (electrical system)

NHTSA 87V104000 Reported 65,196 vehicles potentially affected MERCEDES-BENZ USA, INC.

In case of electrical failure which blows fuse no. 9, the rear brake lights will not operate.

Remedy: Use two fuses in combination so that in case of a fuse failure, the cruise control system will not operate.

  3. Rim (wheels)

NHTSA 85V072000 Reported 6,384 vehicles potentially affected MERCEDES-BENZ USA, INC.

Wheels may develop hairline cracks in the area of the ventilation holes. Consequence of defect: rims may eventually break and could result in loss of control of the car and cause an accident.

    Remedy: Replace rims as necessary.

Checking a specific 1984 Mercedes-Benz 190

How do I know if my 1984 Mercedes-Benz 190 has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 3 campaigns currently list the 1984 Mercedes-Benz 190; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Mercedes-Benz dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 85V072000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.
