  1. Vehicle speed control

NHTSA 94V032000 Reported 39,777 vehicles potentially affected MACK TRUCKS, INCORPORATED

Fuel injection system reconfiguration to comply with engine emission standards cause higher engine vibration levels which lead to early wear and complete failure of the secondary throttle return mechanism.

Remedy: A new production secondary throttle return system configuration will be installed.

  2. Linkages (visibility)

NHTSA 90V051000 Reported 2,350 vehicles potentially affected MACK TRUCKS, INCORPORATED

A tolerance mismatch in the crank assembly of the bosch windshield wiper motor could cause instantaneous separation of the crank from the linkage assembly in the left hand control arm assembly; this would make the system inoperable.

Remedy: Replace left hand control arm linkage assembly.

  3. Shaft sector (steering)

NHTSA 90V052000 Reported 267 vehicles potentially affected MACK TRUCKS, INCORPORATED

Interference between steering gear sector shaft and the frame rail through hole can cause sector shaft wear and can weaken shaft cause it to break.

Remedy: Enlarge frame rail through hole to prevent interference: replace steering gear sector shaft if scored.

Checking a specific 1989 Mack R

How do I know if my 1989 Mack R has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 3 campaigns currently list the 1989 Mack R; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Mack dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 90V051000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.

Recall counts are safety campaigns that list this model year; whether a particular car was already repaired depends on its VIN. How this data is compiled.
