  1. Emission control (engine and engine cooling)

NHTSA 79V212000 Reported 2,950 vehicles potentially affected INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER

The fuel separators on the involved vehicles may have thin walls due to a material thickness problem. The separators in these walls may crack and may allow fuel vapors or liquid fuel to leak into the engine under high pressure conditions.

Remedy: The dealer will install improved separators and relocate both the separator and fuel canister without charge.

  2. Emission control (engine and engine cooling)

NHTSA 78V145000 Reported 2,500 vehicles potentially affected INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER

The vapor separator in the fuel tank evaporative omission system lacks the capacity to prohibit liquid gasoline from passing to the canister under certain fuel expansion conditions. Gasoline would be discharged from the bottom of the canister onto the rear of engine, creating a fire hazard.

Remedy: Dealer will install an additional fuel separator to enlarge capacity, and add a discharge hose to the bottom of the fuel canister.

  3. Axle shaft (power train)

NHTSA 77V020000 Reported 650 vehicles potentially affected INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER

The stub ends of the axle housing may not have been properly manufactured to specifications. These stubs would be of inadequate strength and could fracture. Complete fracture would cause the front wheel, hub, and brake assembly to detach from the axle.

Remedy: The dealer will inspect and, if necessary, install the correct axle housing stubs.

  4. Linkages (steering)

NHTSA 76V039000 Reported 7,207 vehicles potentially affected NAVISTAR INTL CORP.
  5. Service brakes, air: control unit/module

NHTSA 75V117000 Reported 8,500 vehicles potentially affected NAVISTAR INTL CORP.
  6. Automatic transmission (power train)

NHTSA 75V089000 Reported 3,000 vehicles potentially affected NAVISTAR INTL CORP.
  7. Accelerator pedal (vehicle speed control)

NHTSA 73V207000 Reported 500 vehicles potentially affected NAVISTAR INTL CORP.

Checking a specific 1974 International Harvester Loadstar Series

How do I know if my 1974 International Harvester Loadstar Series has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 7 campaigns currently list the 1974 International Harvester Loadstar Series; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised International Harvester dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 73V207000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.

Recall counts are safety campaigns that list this model year; whether a particular car was already repaired depends on its VIN. How this data is compiled.
