  1. Cables (electrical system)

NHTSA 07V173000 Reported 52,240 vehicles potentially affected HARLEY-DAVIDSON MOTOR COMPANY

Certain motorcycles were built with a condition that permits the positive battery cable to contact a weld bead on the oil tank. This may cause the weld bead to abrade through the insulation on the cable and cause an electrical short from the battery through the oil tank and oil lines.

Remedy: Dealers will install a battery caddy that will protect the cable and ensure proper cable routing. This recall began on may 4, 2007. Owners may contact harley-davidson at 1-414-342-4080.

Checking a specific 2007 Harley-Davidson Softail

How do I know if my 2007 Harley-Davidson Softail has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 1 campaign currently lists the 2007 Harley-Davidson Softail; your car may already have been repaired under it.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Harley-Davidson dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 07V173000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.
