The steering gear mounting bracket welds may crack under certain steering load conditions.
Remedy: Replace steering gear mounting bracket with a redesigned bracket.
-
Body (structure)
Corrosion of the grabhandle at its mounting surface may lead to cracking or loss of strength.
Remedy: Replace grabhandle and its fastener with improved grabhandle; also, install gasket between the handle and air starter reservoir.
-
Engine (engine and engine cooling)
Cracks can develop in the oil filter mounting brackets near the bolts that attach the brackets to the frame side member. Some drag link parts can separate from the assembly which connects steering gear pitman arm to the front axle steering arm.
Remedy: Immediate replacement of defective drag links with an improved version, without cost to the owner.

Checking a specific 1981 Freightliner Coe
How do I know if my 1981 Freightliner Coe has an open recall?
Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 4 campaigns currently list the 1981 Freightliner Coe; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.
Is the recall repair free?
Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Freightliner dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 84V161000).
What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?
A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.
