  1. Manual transmission (power train)

NHTSA 78V236000 Reported 28,975 vehicles potentially affected FIAT MOTORS OF N.A., INC.

The drive shaft front centering spline may experience excessive wear due to insufficient lubrication. This can result in transmission jamming, a sudden elimination of power and handling difficulties. Excessive wear could also result in rear transmission housing damage.

Remedy: The drive shaft will be replaced if evidence of premature wear is found. Also, the rear housing and output yoke will be replaced with a new type that will permit sufficient lubrication of the spline. This will be…

  2. Springs (vehicle speed control)

NHTSA 78V010000 Reported 26,600 vehicles potentially affected FIAT MOTORS OF N.A., INC.

There may be breakage in the spriral-shaped spring mounted on the carburetor throttle control lever. This will affect the responsiveness of the accelerator pedal to driver pressure and could affect engine control.

Remedy: The dealer will replace the throttle control lever system with the system in current production.

  3. Master cylinder (service brakes)

NHTSA 77V154000 Reported 47,177 vehicles potentially affected FIAT MOTORS OF N.A., INC.

On the involved vehicles, the rear rubber seal of the brake master cylinder may prematurely wear. Abnormal air infiltration into the hydraulic system would result, causing self-bleeding difficulty. Also, longer brake pedal travel would be experienced and could lead to partial or total loss of action on the front end brakes.

Remedy: Dealer will replace the brake master cylinder and brake fluid reservoir and install a new type of brake level warning indicator, without charge.

  4. Differential unit (power train)

NHTSA 76V115000 Reported 25,905 vehicles potentially affected FIAT MOTORS OF N.A., INC.

Checking a specific 1976 Fiat 131

How do I know if my 1976 Fiat 131 has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 4 campaigns currently list the 1976 Fiat 131; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Fiat dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 76V115000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.

Recall counts are safety campaigns that list this model year; whether a particular car was already repaired depends on its VIN. How this data is compiled.
