  1. Steering wheel/handle bar (steering)

NHTSA 79V180000 Reported 1,223 vehicles potentially affected WHITE MOTOR CORPORATION

Some of the involved vehicles were not inspected for adequate clearance between the steering shaft and its firewall opening. Inadequate clearance could result in the steering column becoming scored or severed by the firewall sheet metal.

Remedy: Dealer will inspect vehicles and, if necessary, enlarge the firewall opening to provide the minimum 3/8 inch clearance for the steering shaft. Any scored or cut shafts will be replaced without charge to owner.

  2. Windshield wiper/washer (visibility)

NHTSA 79V008000 Reported 12,333 vehicles potentially affected WHITE MOTOR CORPORATION

The windshield wiper may over-travel its designed sweep angle during its initial stroke with the possibility of temporary wiper immobilization.

Remedy: Dealer will install a restriction fitting in the control valve at no cost to owner.

  3. Steering wheel/handle bar (steering)

NHTSA 79V110000 Reported 8,921 vehicles potentially affected WHITE MOTOR CORPORATION

The hose clamp, which was installed around the steering column boot seat to keep noise and dirt from entering the cab, may loosen.

Remedy: Dealer will replace the metal hose clamp without charge.

Checking a specific 1978 Autocar Rbw

How do I know if my 1978 Autocar Rbw has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 3 campaigns currently list the 1978 Autocar Rbw; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Autocar dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 79V008000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.

Recall counts are safety campaigns that list this model year; whether a particular car was already repaired depends on its VIN. How this data is compiled.
