  1. Axle assembly (power train)

NHTSA 93V006000 Reported 152,000 vehicles potentially affected VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA,INC

The differential oil of the transaxle is lost over time due to evaporation. Low oil levels cause premature bearing and gear wear and eventual failure of the differential.

Remedy: Drain and replace the differential gear oil with oil having higher performance characteristics.

  2. Fuel system, gasoline

NHTSA 89V006000 Reported 35,000 vehicles potentially affected VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA,INC

Fuel injection seals may harden, due to high temperature and alcohol in some fuels, and allow fuel to escape into the engine compartment.

Remedy: Replace engines fuel injector seals with improved seals plus improvements designed to better insulate the engine against fire risk.

  3. Tank assembly (fuel system)

NHTSA 87V157000 Reported 25,000 vehicles potentially affected VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA,INC

Repeated topping off of fuel tank during refueling reduces the expansion space within the tank allowing vapors to escape from the charcoal filter to outside rather than being inducted into the engine.

Remedy: Install redesigned filler neck and a new vent valve and hose for charcoal filter. Also, stop refueling when pump nozzle shuts off.

  4. Caliper (service brakes)

NHTSA 87V158000 Reported 16,000 vehicles potentially affected VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA,INC

Certain rear brake calipers could bind and consequently overheat.

Remedy: Requires inspection of brake calipers and replacement of calipers as necessary.

Checking a specific 1987 Audi 5000

How do I know if my 1987 Audi 5000 has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN above. The VIN is on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration or insurance card. The check runs against NHTSA's live database and tells you which campaigns list your vehicle. 4 campaigns currently list the 1987 Audi 5000; your car may already have been repaired under some of them.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety recalls at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale to the first owner. Contact any authorised Audi dealer with your VIN and the NHTSA campaign number (for example 87V157000).

What is the difference between a recall and a complaint?

A recall is a safety campaign filed by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, with a defined defect and remedy. A complaint is a report an owner sent to NHTSA; it is not verified, but patterns of complaints are what trigger NHTSA investigations and, eventually, recalls.
