Defect
Lbce is recalling certain model year 2010 lbce model htc-3140 cranes equipped with caterpillar diesel c15 engines. Overtime, a weld in the combustion tube that is inside of the diesel particulate filter can fail causing the filter to be burned through by hot combustion gases.
Safety risk
A fire could result if these hot gases erupt near something flammable.
Remedy
Caterpillar is handling the owner notification and remedy for this campaign. Please see caterpillar's defect report 11e-006. Caterpillar will replace the existing combustion tube with a thick wall combustion tube which will not allow the heat to break through. This service will be performed free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety recall by lbce on june 2, 2011. A second notice will be issued when parts become available which is currently estimated to be mid-august 2011. Owners may contact caterpillar toll-free at 1-800-447-4986.
